Forging and ring rolling
Closed-die, open-die and rolled rings, on the same site as the melting.
| Closed-die | To 300 kg, die-dependent |
| Open-die | To 300 kg, to drawing |
| Rolled rings | To 1,200 mm outside diameter |
| Flange blanks | Rough machined |
| Condition | As forged, or rough machined with allowance |
What decides whether a shape can be formed
- Section thickness against overall size — a thin wall on a large ring is harder than a heavy one.
- Die availability for closed-die work; a new die is a tooling item with its own lead time.
- The grade: Waspaloy and 718 do not run on the same schedule, so a shape that works in one may need a different route in the other.
- The inspection requirement — a part that must be UT inspected to a class needs a shape that can actually be inspected.
Ring rolling
Rolled rings are formed with the grain running around the circumference, which is what a flange or a bearing race needs. The alternative — machining a ring out of plate — cuts across that grain and wastes material; it is chosen when the quantity is small, not when the part has to carry load.
