Machining
Rough or finish, to the drawing, with the tolerance on the dimensions that decide fit and preload.
| Operation | Tolerance | Used when |
|---|---|---|
| Rough machining | 2–5 mm per side left | Part goes to the customer’s finish shop |
| Finish machining | ±0.01 mm on critical dimensions | Part goes to assembly or NDT |
| Threading | Unified and metric | Bolting and threaded parts |
| Basis | The customer drawing is the acceptance document |
Why the drawing governs
A forging is not a catalogue part. The dimensions that matter are the ones the drawing marks, and machining is planned around those rather than around a nominal size. Where a dimension is not marked, it is still held — but the critical ones are what the inspection report is built on.
Inspection after machining
| Dimensional | To the drawing, on the marked dimensions | Dimensional report |
| Hardness | After heat treatment | Certificate |
| NDT | Where the specification requires it after machining | Report |
