Packing and delivery
A heat number that cannot be read on arrival is the same as no heat number.
| Part marking | Heat number on the part where the drawing allows |
| Bundle tag | Grade, condition, heat number, serial where the part carries one |
| Corrosion protection | Applied to machined surfaces for sea freight |
| Case or crate | Built for the mode of transport and the part weight |
| Documentation | Certificate, NDT report and packing list in one set |
Two failures to avoid
- The tag travels separately from the part and the two are never matched again.
- Machined surfaces arrive with rust because the case was built for road, not sea.
Both are packing decisions, not manufacturing ones, and both are cheap to prevent at the crate. Where the part is too small to mark, the number goes on the tag and on the certificate together so the two can still be reconciled after the tag is separated.
Name the mode of transport and the destination port on the enquiry. A case for air freight and a case for sea freight are not the same case, and neither is a default.
