Quoting bar
From the drawing to a cut length, without leaving the condition open.
Bar is bought to make a part, so the drawing is the starting point. Diameter, cut length and condition all follow from what the part is, and a quotation given without them is a price for something else.
| Part and drawing | What is being machined from the bar |
| Grade | With the UNS number where the drawing carries one |
| Cut length | Finished part length plus facing and parting allowance |
| Condition | Annealed, solution annealed, or solution treated and aged |
| Finish | Peeled, ground, or hot-rolled where the skin is machined away |
| Inspection | UT class where the part is a pressure or rotating item |
Why cut length changes the price
The usable length per cut decides how many parts come out of a bar and therefore the piece price. A customer who sends the finished part length alone is quoted against an allowance we had to guess; sending the machining allowance removes the guess.
What the quotation confirms
| Maximum single length | At that diameter and grade |
| Tolerance | On the diameter band ordered |
| UT class | The class we can meet on that section |
| Condition | Recorded so the certificate matches the order |
