As forged, rough machined or finish machined — decided by what your own shop will do next.

| As forged | Full allowance left | Your shop does all machining |
| Rough machined | 2–5 mm per side | Your shop does finish machining |
| Finish machined | To drawing | Part goes straight to assembly or to NDT |
Heat treatment condition
| Solution annealed | Soft, ready for the customer’s own ageing |
| Solution annealed and aged | Final properties reached before shipment |
| Stress relieved | Where subsequent machining would otherwise distort the part |
| As specified | AMS or ASTM callout named on the purchase order |
Identification
- Heat number marked on the part where the drawing allows, and on the tag in every case.
- Grade and condition on the tag.
- Serial number for parts that carry one.
- Certificate matched to the same heat number.
